Lufthansa, the German airline, has announced a partnership with software giant SAP to promote the take-up of blockchain in the airline sector.

The duo’s new Aviation Blockchain Challenge invites “groundbreaking ideas” for blockchain use in the industry.

Operated by Lufthansa Innovation Hub and SAP.iO Berlin Foundry, the competition is focused on blockchain-based solutions that make airline traveller’s customer experience, processes, supply chains, and maintenance procedures smoother, safer and more interconnected.

Entrants have until August 31, 2018 to submit their ideas in three categories: “Traveler Challenge”, “Airline Challenge” and “Supplier Challenge”. Participants can further develop their ideas in collaboration with experts from the Lufthansa Group and SAP and apply for a specific pilot project within the context of the “Lufthansa Innovation Forum”

The Traveller Challenge category seeks ideas that offer added value for travellers across the entire travel chain, from booking to airport identification.

Meanwhile, the Airline Challenge segment seeks proposals that improve airline specific operations and related processes, for example by optimizing the sharing of data across company and departmental boundaries.

Lastly, the Supplier Challenge category is all about ideas that have the potential to rethink maintenance and related aspects of the aviation supply chain – from document tracking and digitization to the transparent verification of documentation.
