Opera announces launch of new crypto-focused web browser
At the Hard Fork Decentralized event in London this week, Opera announced the release of their new browser designed for use on the decentralized web. The browser’s built-in cryptocurrency wallet makes it a first of its kind.
The decentralized web or Web 3.0, is a relatively new term concerning the next step in internet evolution. Web 3.0 will differ from previous generations in that it will be more open, connected, and harness the power of artificial intelligence in order to simplify searches.
Opera executive VP Krystian Kolondra explained the companies intentions for expanding the browser saying,
“Our hope is that this step will accelerate the transition of cryptocurrencies from speculation and investment to being used for actual payments and transactions…”
Along with access to a crypto wallet, the browser enables users to manage their online identity and explore decentralized apps.
At the moment, the browser is only available for Android, but Opera intends to release versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux as well. And although it is launching exclusively on the Ethereum network, the company is looking into expanding support for other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. The browser can be downloaded for free here.
