The IOTA blockchain platform and Volkswagen will roll out their first collaborative product, the Digital Car Pass, in the first quarter of 2019.

The new product, which will track performance data via IOTA blockchain technology, is to be released in 2019 according to Volkswagen’s head of blockchain Benjamin Sinram at the recent Ecomotion “Smart Mobility meets Blockchain Technologies” event held in Tel Aviv.

The collaborative effort between the platform and the world’s largest car maker by sales volume made public a proof of concept earlier this year representing the future of automotive technology at Cebit 2018.

The ability for Volkswagen and other car manufacturers to provide transparent, secure and trustworthy data is important to provide customers with a level of security and the technology can deliver a public proof of data integrity if an accident occurs.

Volkswagen’s head of blockchain, Benjamin Sinram said of the project: “We want to enable our autonomous cars to (provide) services for you and pay autonomously for these services with their own money.”

The IOTA-enabled CarPass is one of five blockchain initiatives currently under active development by Volkswagen and other projects under development include a blockchain-based identity solution to allow more than one individual to share vehicle access and a supply chain-oriented open ledger which can track vehicle parts from manufacturer to customer.
